Children may experience the pain of loss in a wide variety of situations - ranging from the devastating blow of losing a parent as a result of death or divorce, to the absence of friends and familiar contacts after a move to another town, or separation from a parent who has to work abroad for long periods.

Through years of work with hundreds of bereaved children, child and family therapist Claudia Jewett has developed the simple techniques described here - techniques that any adult can use to help children through their grief.  From the agonising moment when an adult must tell a child what has happened, through the shock and denial, then anger and depression, that follow, Jewett describes the stages of mourning and behaviour that can be expected of grieving children at each stage.  Using case histories and sample dialogues between helper and child, she explains how to help children come to a timely resolution of their grief.

Any adult faced with the responsibility of helping a grieving child - as parent, social worker, therapist, counsellor, teacher or friend - performs a difficult and delicate task, but one crucial to the child's well-being.  He or she will find this clear and practical guide immensely helpful in carrying out that task.
